Overview
The Doan Foundation funds scholarships that cultivate artistic talent and advance creative leadership among young people from underserved communities. These awards are intended for students who show strong commitment to the arts and a drive to create positive social impact through their creative work.
Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be a current high school senior living in Southern California.
- Plan to enroll in an accredited college, university, or vocational/technical institution to pursue an Associate degree, Bachelor’s degree, or a professional certificate.
- Be preparing for a career in an arts-related field. Eligible disciplines include (but are not limited to): art, crafts, drawing, painting, papermaking, printmaking, sculpture, visual arts, furnishing & design, design, photography, film/video, filmmaking, music (general), music composition, instrumental performance, vocal performance, music theory, theater (general), theater performance, musical theater, theater design, theater production, playwriting, literary composition, dance, and related creative fields.
- Demonstrate financial need through the federal/state aid process.
- Have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Provide documentation from the financial aid process: a FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) and/or a California Aid Report (CAR).
Application materials (required)
Submit all of the following items to complete your application:
- Completed application form.
- Financial aid documentation: a copy of your current FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) or, if applicable, your California Dream Act application materials; and a copy of your California Aid Report (CAR).
- Personal statement: a 500-word essay, double-spaced, in 12-point font. Respond to one of the prompts: describe an occasion when art influenced your life, or explain how you intend to use your artistic abilities to benefit your community.
- Artistic samples: at least two examples of your work (these may be uploaded files or links to video/audio/image portfolios).
- A headshot (does not need to be professionally taken).
- Unofficial high school transcript to verify your GPA.
- If available, acceptance letters and any financial aid award notices from the institutions you are considering.
- Interview: top candidates will be invited to a final interview, which will take place either in person or via Zoom.
Incomplete or missing items may disqualify your application, so please submit a full packet.
