Ben W. Fortson Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Surveying and Mapping Society of Georgia
SAMSEF offers a portfolio of scholarships to support students pursuing education in land surveying. Each year, recipients of these annual awards are chosen by a panel of land surveyors drawn from a neighboring state’s land surveying society. All annual scholarships are distributed by July of each year.

Ben W. Fortson Scholarship
- Amount: $3,500 per year
- Managed by SAMSEF, the Ben W. Fortson Scholarship was created in 1980 by members of SAMSOG and honors the memory of Ben W. Fortson. Fortson served for many years as Secretary of State and Surveyor General for the State of Georgia and was a dedicated proponent of the land surveying profession in Georgia.
- Purpose: To provide financial assistance to students working toward a bachelor’s degree in land surveying or in a closely related course of study.
- Award: One student is selected each academic year to receive this scholarship. Over the years the fund has helped numerous surveying students continue their education in the field.
